Chile enough for you?

We’re so excited to be part of the theatrical release of ‘NO’ tomorrow evening and even more delighted that over 90 people want to come and see a Chilean film, in the wilds of the South East London suburbs, on a chilly Wednesday evening!

The BFFS, in conjunction with Network Releasing, have enabled us to have this pre-DVD release screening and we fervently hope that other distribution companies will look to the increasingly vibrant community cinema/film society/pop-up cinema scene and find ways of including us in theatrical releases more often – this must be an especially sensible thing for distributors of independent and World cinema films as they essentially have a pre-sold niche audience, which, when taken together, amounts to many hundred thousands box office admissions nationally.

The BFFS’s annual report from last year shows the growth of small cinemas like FILMBOX:

Add some 50s glamour to your evening tonight!

Tickets will be available on the door for tonight’s film – ‘My Week with Marilyn’ – box office open at 6.30pm, bar opens at 6.40pm and film programme starts at 7.30pm, and finishes by 9.20pm.  Tickets only £7 for a BIG SCREEN experience (Filmbox members £3.50). We are your new local cinema venue, so come and see us – free parking.

Marilyn Monroe would have been 86 this year – underrated, misunderstood and captivating on screen. Olivier hoped that making ‘The Prince and the Showgirl’ with her in 1957 would make him a Hollywood star and she hoped that working with Britian’s leading thesp would mean she was finally taken seriously – but it didn’t work out that way for either of them. Five years later – she was found dead in suspicious circumstances. ‘My Week with Marilyn’ recreates a little known week of her life spent in England and the solace she found with an impressionable young man, Colin Clark – a true story, based on his book.

My heart belongs to… FILMBOX!

Tickets available on the door tomorrow, Wed 30 Jan, for ‘My Week With Marilyn’ (S Curtis, 2011, Cert 15) – bar opens 6.40pm, film prog starts 7.30pm and finishes by 9.20pm. Only £7 per ticket (£3.50 for FILMBOX members) – free parking in Hawksbrook Lane. Free Cocoa Mistress handmade chocolate if you come in 1950s dress! Go on… come and join us, there’s nothing on TV!

MWWM film TRAILER click here. A great cast, starring Golden Globe winner Michelle Williams (Brokeback Mountain, Shutter Island), rising star Eddie Redmayne (TV’s Birdsong, Les Miserables) and Kenneth Branagh (TV’s Wallander, Harry Potter); the film explores a week Monroe spent filming with Laurence Olivier and her relationship with Colin Clark, who formed a special friendship with the beleaguered Hollywood star.

Also starring Judi Dench, Emma Watson and Zoe Wannamaker. A glamorous evocation of 1950s England, but showing the many pressures on Monroe at that stage of her life.  If Monroe’s life hadn’t ended in tragic circumstances when she was only 36 in 1962, she would now be 86 years old.

FILMBOX has use of 2 cinema spaces and as we’ve sold out our studio cinema for this film we’ll be showing it in the stunning, recently named Bromley Hall (still at Langley Park Centre for the Performing Arts, Beckenham – nr Eden Park station), which has a HUGE screen and stereo sound; we’ve been told it’s the best cinema screen around – so do come and see for yourself.

A Year 13 student team will be running the show tomorrow night – a great chance for them to demonstrate their business and entrepreneurial skills, so do come and support them and discover a great new place to go in the Bromley & Beckenham area.

This week’s News Shopper has listed us as one of their ‘Top 5 Things to Do This Week’.

Diamonds (or chocolates?) are a Girl’s Best Friend…

For new FILMBOX patrons, just to confirm that the Bromley Hall is also at Langley Park School for Boys (as is Studio 609) – its new 472 seater performance space. If you book tickets from Ticket Source there is only one screening of ‘My Week with Marilyn’ on 30 Jan and it will be in this hall, even though the original Studio 609 venue is still listed on Ticket Source – it doesn’t matter which you book in, this is where the film will be shown. We hope you all have a great night – do tell your friends too!

BOOK OUR TWO FEBRUARY FILMS  NOW- Whether you have a Valentine or not, ‘Midnight in Paris’ on Wed 13 February will surely make you smile and laugh – a romantic comedy with a difference, which reminds us of all the artists and writers who flocked to Paris across the decades. Owen Wilson is an anxious modern-day Hollywood script-writer who longs to be a ‘real’ writer. He’s on the verge of getting married and settling back into his LA lifestyle, but he yearns for the life of an artist in the bars and clubs of 1920s Paris.

Rachel McAdams is perfect as his unsympathetic fiance, Michael Sheen turns in a great cameo as a cultural know-it-all, the former French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s wife, Carla Bruni, also has a cameo and  Marion Cotillard is enchanting as the woman Wilson’s character meets and shares nostalgia with.  Allen’s script crackles with wit and the cinematography makes Paris look so beautiful, you’ll want to book a weekend there sharpish|!

Our licensed bar will be selling a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, including sparkling wine, and local snacks.

This month’s ‘special feature’ on 13/2/13 will be complimentary tasting of a delectable range of hand-made fairtrade chocolates from The Cocoa Mistress .
