A great Christmas classic, with a timely message about the most important things in life, James Stewart is superb as George Bailey, an everyday hero in a small American town – almost like a Norman Rockwell painting brought to  life.

Wednesday 21 November‘Moonrise Kingdom’ (Wes Anderson, 2012, USA, Cert 12A, 94mins) – “Wes Anderson’s elegant new film is eccentric but heartfelt – a soufflé of strangeness that rises superbly – 4/5 stars”, writes Peter Bradshaw (The Guardian).

This is a gem of a film and it almost got lost in the hullabaloo that accompanied Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus‘ this summer. It’s typically quirky and charming with Wes Anderson’s unmistakeable lightness of touch – a story of two innocent runaways and the dysfunctional but well-meaning adults they leave behind.

If you liked US ‘indie’ hits, such as Little Miss Sunshine (Dayton & Harris, 2006), Napoleon Dynamite (Hess, 2004) and indeed Anderson’s own superb The Royal Tennenbaums (2001), you’ll surely sit through this with a gentle smile playing across your lips. A superb ensemble cast, including class acts, such as Coen Bros regular, Frances McDormand, Edward Norton and Bill Murray, with an uncharacteristically low-key cameo performance from Bruce Willis, plus two very promising teen leads.

IAWL makes the grandest possible case for the importance and uniqueness of individual agency… Funny, compelling and moving. 5/5 stars” Ben Walters, Time Out

Surely in most people’s top 5 Christmas films of all time, to some this choice might be a cliche of Christmas film programming, but we had to do it! If you’ve only ever seen this on DVD or TV, you HAVE to see it on our big screen WITH an audience this Christmas. If you’ve never seen it, I envy you…

James Stewart stars as George Bailey who learns just how important his life really is – a life-affirming lesson for us all, this and every Christmas.

We are pleased to announce that it will be screened in the Performance Hall due to probable demand and so we’d like to extend our invitation to cineastes young and old – this film is a ‘Cert U’ therefore we welcome all ages for this magical film.
