Herne Hill Free Film Festival back in town this May!

Following on from the success of 2014, the volunteer run and entirely free Herne Hill Free Film Festival (HHFFF) is back for throughout May 2015.

This year sees Station Square audiences hoot to Peter Sellers and Alec Guinness in The Ladykillers (1955), the Herne Hill Velodrome come to life with the Dardenne’s The Kid With a Bike (2011) and Brockwell Lido bathed in pastel for Wes Anderson’s sublime The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014). The festival culminates in Brockwell Park with the utterly bodacious cult classic Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989)!

Completely free and community led

At a time of escalating cinema ticket prices and the gradual fragmentation of London’s neighbourhoods, the Herne Hill Free Film Festival makes a welcome return as a completely free, completely volunteer-led, locally focused community film festival. First and foremost the HHFFF aims to entertain with a plethora of great films from recent years, as well as a host of classics. On top of this, however, it also draws the local film loving community together and attracts people not just from Herne Hill but local neighbourhoods like West Norwood, Camberwell, Brixton and beyond into one place to share ideas, make new friendships, learn new skills and come away with an enhanced appreciation for the brilliantly eclectic area in which they live. As ever, the HHFFF is organised entirely by volunteers and funded by donations and sponsorship from local estate agent Pedder and the Herne Hill forum.

A captivating performance by Kim Novak, with James Stewart in an untypical but career-changing role.

The film is rarely seen at the cinema and tonight will be in the main cinema on the BIG screen in the Bromley Hall – refreshments from 6.40pm and the film programme starts at 7.30pm with two special introductions to the film and Bernard Herrmann’s amazing mesmerising music (brief but informative!). We’ll also be selling Simply ice cream from Ashford in Kent – Honeycomb Crunch is everyone’s favourite but the other flavours are great too!

Save the David Lean Cinema – https://www.facebook.com/LeanCampaign

That Croydon Council saw fit to mothball this great little independent cinema , before seeing if another model was fit for purpose, ie ‘non-profit’, seemed short-sighted at best and now a campaign has been running for the past 2 years to try to get it re-opened in its original location and the campaign group shows films in The Spread Eagle pub just around the corner from the Croydon Clocktower.

Film Music

On a different but film-related tack, here’s a concert recommendation from one of our FILMBOX patrons:

Last night I went to the Royal Albert Hall to hear the marvellous John Wilson orchestra in the “Hollywood Rhapsody Prom” featuring many of the composers who scored non-musical pictures from the 1930s to the 1960s. One of the scores featured was “Psycho” and I thought that you might like to alert your  recent “Psycho”FILMBOX patrons to the fact that this prom is being televised next Friday 30th August at 7.30p.m. on BBC4 so that they can enjoy hearing a fantantastic 90 strong orchestra performing, inter alia, the “Psycho” suite for strings. The Albert Hall was packed out for a wonderful concert. John Wilson, still in his early 40s, has single-handledly arranged the music of  many MGM and Warner Brothers’ musical films and has a massive following of people of all ages who just love to hear his orchestra perform.’ C.W.

Thanks Christine for your super recommendation and we’d love to have more content from our FILMBOX patrons so please feel free to email us and we’ll post it – also you are very welcome to  comment on our posts.

…Happy 1st Birthday to US!

Imagine a robot who can cook, clean, do the garden, monitor your blood pressure, keep you healthy… and out of trouble. ‘Robot & Frank’ is a gentle comedy which reflects on the theme of memory. Frank Langhella’s performance is dry and low-key as a recalcitrant jewel-thief who won’t grow old gracefully, ably supported by Susan Sarandon, Liv Tyler and James Marsden. A great script and  story – we know you’ll enjoy our opening film – click on the poster to your right on the sidebar for the trailer. Tickets only £7 non-members (£4 members) – age 16+ only. Limited availability and tickets not available on the door – seating non-allocated in Studio 609 (seats 84).
