Mike Leigh brings his unique directorial style, and the airy cinematography of Dick Pope who recreates the “rain, steam, speed” of Turner’s paintings, to a superb evocation of the time and Turner’s life. Moreover, Spall is every bit the artist himself, always compelling, as described in a great review from Mark Kermode, “…there are plenty of bursts of raucous laughter, most of them generated by Spall, whose ear for a well-timed line is as keen as his character’s eye for colourful detail. He may have spent two years learning to paint in preparation for this career-defining role, but what shines through is a lifetime spent mastering the full spectrum of the performer’s palette, all of which is employed in this awards-worthy portrait of a man wrestling light with his hands as if it were a physical element: tangible, malleable, corporeal.” (2 November 2014, The Observer) Cannes 2014: Mr Turner Above: Timothy Spall as JMW Turner with Paul Jesson, who plays the artist’s beloved father, William, who helped him throughout his career, often by mixing his paints.
